Everything you need to know about Floorwise Acoustica Pro30

Floors between apartments and other attached homes have to meet sound insulation rules: Technical Guidance Document E in Ireland, Approved Document E in England and Wales, Technical Booklet G in Northern Ireland and Section 5 of the Building Regulations in Scotland. Acoustica Pro30 is made to help achieve compliance when it's fully bonded as a soft floor covering over a Floor Type 1, with an impact sound reduction of 19dB.

For a bonded installation, the subfloor needs to be reasonably level, sound, dry and clean, with a moisture content below 75%RH. Roll the underlay out in the longest lengths possible, butting the edges tightly without overlapping, and leave a 2 to 3mm gap around the room. Fold it back, apply the flooring adhesive as its manufacturer directs and let it tack off, then smooth the underlay by hand and finish with a 70kg roller. Fit the skirting above the underlay, fill the perimeter gap with a flexible sealant to cut flanking sound, and leave the floor untrafficked for at least 24 hours before laying the floor covering.

Acoustica Pro30 also works as a conventional sound-reducing underlay under wood, laminate and vinyl flooring, including SPC and LVT. Over timber floors, lay it at right angles to the floorboards and tape the joints, leaving a 5cm upstand at the walls that you trim flush once the floor is down. At 900kg/m³ it gives firm, even support under the floor, and its low 0.35 tog thermal rating lets heat through, which makes it a good match for underfloor heating. SPC and LVT makers often set their own limits on underlay thickness and density, so always check the floor covering and adhesive manufacturers' guidance before you start.
